Exploring Functional Brain Connectivity in Pediatric Focal Epilepsy

Epilepsy Awareness Day was March 26th. Flux Communications Committee Member Christina Lutz, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Universityof Geneva, provided this following podcast, which delves into the critical research on functional brain connectivity in children with focal epilepsy. 

Epilepsy causes erratic brain activity, triggering seizures with loss of awareness & muscle control. 1 in 3 cases starts in childhood. Treatments exist but aren’t a cure & fail in 30% of patients. Delays worsen outcomes, especially in children.

 

Although the primary diagnosis of epilepsy is done via EEG, an interesting recent review suggested changes in functional connectivity measured using fMRI in children with epilepsy. Listen to a podcast based on this paper: HERE.
