Institute for Human Neuroscience Supervisor Name: Tony W Wilson Position Title: Open Faculty Positions at the Institute for Human Neuroscience
Description: The Institute for Human Neuroscience at Boys Town National Research Hospital (BTNRH) in Omaha invites applications for two junior faculty positions (Assistant Professor/Research Scientist I) in Cognitive Neuroscience. For these tenure-equivalent positions, we welcome applicants from any area of cognitive neuroscience, including executive function, visual attention, perception, emotion, motor control, memory, and methods-oriented areas, and are especially interested in building our existing research programs in pediatric brain health. Methodological specialty within neuroimaging is open, but ideally the candidate would benefit from our strong existing programs in MEG imaging, multimodal MRI, optically-pumped magnetometry (OPM), and/or neuromodulation, and develop a nationally recognized program focusing on their area of interest. The successful applicant will receive strong financial support for building their research program, including a generous start-up package, and would join a growing group of cognitive neuroscientists, both within the Institute and across campus, using the latest tools in human neuroscience. The Institute is also home to the Center for Pediatric Brain Health, which is an NIH P20 Center of Biomedical Research Excellence. The Center for Pediatric Brain Health includes multiple research support mechanisms for junior faculty, including both pilot project funding ($50k direct costs per year) and major research project funding (approx. $175k direct costs per year for 3-4 years). Faculty previously supported by this mechanism have been highly successful in acquiring independent R01-level funding from the NIH.
Successful candidates will have a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in neuroscience, psychology, physics, computer science or related field, with postdoctoral training and an excellent publication record for their career stage. Candidates should also have a sustained record of research in high impact journals and demonstrated ability, or evidence of the potential, to generate extramural funding commensurate with their career stage. Applicants should have the ability and interest to teach graduate courses in cognitive neuroscience, and to mentor PhD students in our growing joint PhD program in Neuroscience with Creighton University.
The 18,000+ square foot Institute for Human Neuroscience is a vibrant research environment with state-of-the-art equipment and ample opportunities for training and transdisciplinary collaboration. The Institute houses the latest equipment available in the field of noninvasive neuroimaging, including two Neo MEG systems, which are the most advanced MEG units currently available, a 3T Siemens Prisma MRI system, an NIH S10 supported OPM suite, a mock MRI scanner, and a high-performance computing cluster. The Institute’s resources also include state-of-the-art high-definition transcranial electrical stimulation (HD-tES) equipment, and biomechanical equipment for quantifying human movement physiology. The Institute also houses a biospecimen collection suite and specimen processing facility for quantitative biological assays, as well as a fully-staffed 3D printing suite with both SLS and FDM printing capabilities.
BTNRH is the regional hub for pediatric neuroscience research and specialty clinical care and includes the largest child and adolescent psychiatry and pediatric neurology programs in the region. BTNRH also includes the only level 4 pediatric epilepsy center in the state and the largest pediatric residential treatment center in the Midwest. These medical resources provide Institute investigators with unique access to various clinical populations.
We expect to hire two junior faculty through the current initiative, with a start date in 2026. Interested applicants should submit a letter detailing current research interests, a list of the applicant’s five most important publications, and a curriculum vitae to Dr. Tony Wilson (tony.wilson@boystown.org). Contact information for three references will be requested at a later time. Applications are currently being accepted with interviews scheduled on a rolling basis and final selections by late January.
Omaha is a rapidly growing metro area with over a million people. Despite being the home to many Fortune 500 companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, Union Pacific, and Mutual of Omaha, the cost of living is 4 to 10% below the national average. The city also has a disproportionally large and vibrant academic research community, being the home to two large medical schools, multiple universities, and several research institutes. Omaha offers many outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, has an extensive music scene, hosts many national sporting events, and is frequently rated as one of the best cities to live in the United States.
