Dis/ability is prevalent and sometimes hidden, yet it is often overlooked in our field’s conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. For this year’s diversity session, we bring these topics into focus, bringing together a group of speakers to discuss dis/ability and inclusion from multiple perspectives—personal and academic. Scott Hatley, a leader in the disability space and executive director of nonprofit Incight, will kick off the conversation by discussing his work leveraging disability as a strength to be harnessed for opportunity.
Inge-Marie Eigsti, professor in the department of psychological sciences at University of Connecticut, will next discuss issues around inclusion and exclusion in clinical neuroscience, drawing from Dis/ability studies and Critical Race Theory (DisCrit). Finally, Monica Ellwood-Lowe, postdoctoral scholar at University of Pennsylvania, will talk about dis/ability within Flux, including her personal experiences navigating the field with an invisible disability. The talks will be followed by a conversation moderated by Maira Karan, and end with an audience Q&A . Ultimately, the goal of this session is to provide Flux members with a deeper understanding of the heterogeneity of dis/ability and practical knowledge for advancing accessibility and inclusivity.
