Be Part of Flux’s Growth: Volunteer for a Committee Role

Nov 7, 2024 | For community, For society members

Flux members are invited to get involved with the Society by joining one of our committees! This is a great opportunity to contribute to the future of our society, shape the direction of key initiatives, and collaborate with fellow researchers in developmental cognitive neuroscience.

Committees meet approximately every six (6) weeks from October through March and every four weeks April through September.

Communications Committee

Co-Chairs: Tzipi Horowotz-Kraus & Barbara Braams
Time Commitment: Approximately 3-5 hours per month.

The Communications Committee (Comcom) is responsible for enhancing the visibility and reach of the Flux Society to Scientists, the Public, and Policy Makers. With support of the Executive Office, the Comcom manages content for the Flux website, blog, newsletters, and social media channels. Additionally, the Comcom puts on the Annual Outreach Event, and publishes Flux's Podcast, Sensitive Periods.

Members will help develop strategies to engage the developmental cognitive neuroscience community, promote Flux events, and highlight important research and society initiatives. If you are passionate about science communication and have skills in writing, editing, or social media management, we encourage you to join!

Trainee Committee

Co-Chairs: Niamh MacSweeney & Phoebe Thomson
Time Commitment: Approximately 2-3 hours per month.

The Trainee Committee represents the voice and interests of student and postdoctoral members within the Flux Society. This committee is dedicated to creating programs, events, and resources that support the professional development of early-career researchers.

Members will help organize trainee-focused events at the Annual Flux Congress, including the Trainee Lunch, workshops, and the Mentor-Mentee Match. If you are a trainee or have a strong interest in mentoring the next generation of scientists, this committee is a great fit for you!

Awards Committee

Chairs: Christian K. Tamnes
Time Commitment: Approximately 5-8 hours during Awards Season.

The Awards Committee oversees the nomination, selection, and presentation of the Flux Society's various awards, and proposes new Awards to the Board of Directors.

Committee members will collaborate to ensure a fair and transparent awards process, from soliciting nominations to reviewing applications. If you have a keen eye for recognizing excellence and a commitment to upholding high standards, consider volunteering for this committee.

Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging Committee

Co-Chairs: Stefanie Bodison & Jenn Pfeifer
Time Commitment: Approximately 2-3 hours per month.

The Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DIB) Committee is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment within the Flux Society. The committee works to develop initiatives that promote equity and representation across all society activities, including conferences, leadership roles, and membership engagement. The DIB Committee hosts the Annual Diversity Symposia and oversees the Flux Affinity Groups.

Members will collaborate on programs and policies that support diversity in developmental cognitive neuroscience, including ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all members. If you are passionate about creating a more inclusive scientific community, this is the committee for you.

Governance Task Force

Chair: TBD
Time Commitment: 8-15 hour total commitment over the next 12 months

The Governance Task Force is responsible for reviewing and recommending updates to the Flux Society’s governance structures, policies, and bylaws. This task force focuses on ensuring that Flux operates efficiently and effectively while remaining aligned with its mission and values.

Members will work on improving transparency, enhancing member engagement, refining leadership roles within the organization and the Flux Committee Structure. If you have experience in organizational management or are interested in shaping the future Flux, we encourage you to participate in this important work.

Congress Program Committee

Co-Chairs: Andrew Lynn & Xiaoqian Chai
Time Commitment: 8-15 hour total commitment

The Congress Program Committee plays a crucial role in shaping the scientific content and overall experience of the annual Flux Congress. This committee is responsible for reviewing abstract submissions, selecting keynote speakers, symposia, and organizing the scientific sessions for the Congress. NEW for 2025, the Committee will also work with the local hosts to organize an in-person outreach meeting.

Members will collaborate to ensure the program reflects the latest advancements in developmental cognitive neuroscience and addresses the interests of attendees from diverse research backgrounds. If you are passionate about curating impactful scientific content and have experience in organizing conferences or scientific sessions, the Congress Program Committee offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute.
