The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking outstanding tenure track faculty to deepen and expand research and teaching related to race and social equity. As a part of this overarching initiative, the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience invites applications for a tenure-track position in Developmental Psychology at the Assistant Professor level, to begin July 2022.
We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in one or more of three primary areas (1) social and cultural developmental processes among BIPOC and other minoritized families and communities (e.g., developmental implications of racial and social inequities; racial and cultural protective processes); (2) effects of racial and social inequities in cognitive development or developmental cognitive neuroscience (e.g., educational/cognitive disparities; influences on developing biobehavioral systems); or (3) health disparities across the lifespan (e.g., developmental and contextual mechanisms early in life that explain disparities in adult outcomes). We seek scholars with scientific perspectives that attend to multiple contexts of development (e.g., family, school, peer, community) and levels of analysis (e.g., sociocultural, interpersonal, cognitive, affective, neural).
This position is one part of a larger set of actions being undertaken by the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and the College of Arts and Sciences to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Successful candidates will display scholarly activities in research, teaching, mentoring, and/or community engagement that are consistent with and demonstrate a commitment to principles of social justice and inclusion. This position is part of an initiative to study health and wellnesses in communities of color and has hired diverse faculty across multiple departments to conduct interdisciplinary research on a broad theme. The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience has faculty across 6 program areas (Behavioral & Integrative Neuroscience, Clinical, Cognitive, Developmental, Quantitative, and Social Psychology), providing opportunities for exciting collaboration and innovation. The School of Education, Gillings School of Global Public Health, and UNC Centers and Institutes (Institute for African American Research, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, Center for Health Equity Research, Biomedical Research Imaging Center, Nutrition Research Institute) also provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related field by the time of appointment. The successful applicant will demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and extramural research support. Additionally, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of, or the potential for, contributing to mentoring and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates should have a strong record of research productivity appropriate to their rank or level, the potential to develop (or record of) an independent research program, and a commitment to mentoring and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
