The Department of Education in the School of Education & Information Studies at UCLA announces a search for an assistant or associate professor in the area of education and neuroscience. Advancements in brain science are rapidly accumulating with exciting applications to the education of students in schools. We seek applicants who will use neuroscience principles and methods to address key Department priorities, including advancing our understanding of human development, learning, and individual differences therein and optimizing educational practice or policy to address the needs of diverse learners.

Position Description/Important Characteristics

Successful applicants will complement departmental strengths and integrate neuroscientific and/or physiological measures into their work to examine individual differences in learning, achievement or development; mechanisms of behavioral change; or interactions between neurobiological processes and individual, environmental or systemic factors. We welcome applicants using a diverse range of methods, including but not limited to behavioral, neuroimaging (e.g., EEG/ERP, fNIRS, MRI/fMRI/DTI) and neurophysiological techniques (e.g., eye tracking). Candidates using these methods to study cognitive development (e.g., development of executive functioning, literacy, or STEM-related skills), social development, language learning or bilingualism, developmental or learning disabilities, factors conferring risk/resilience, or other topics relevant to education are encouraged to apply. We welcome applicants engaging in community- or school-based research, and particularly, those engaging with communities underrepresented in research.

The successful candidate will primarily affiliate with one of the divisions in the Department of Education. Connections with one or more of the other divisions are also encouraged. Divisions include Human Development and Psychology, Higher Education and Organizational Change (HEOC), Social Research Methodology (SRM), Social Sciences and Comparative Education (SSCE), and Urban Schooling (US). We seek candidates who can teach courses that address topics such as educational neuroscience, cognitive or social development, reading and literacy, the development of mathematical reasoning, and methods of neuroscience. Teaching and advising are also expected in one or more of the Education Department's professional programs (e.g., Teacher Education Program, Educational Leadership Program) and the undergraduate major in Education and Social Transformation.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. (or equivalent), or have advanced to candidacy, in education, neuroscience, cognitive science, special education, developmental psychology, or related areas at the time of application. Doctoral degree must be completed by the time of the position start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

A record of research and scholarly publications consistent with an appointment at the assistant or associate professor level; and the ability to teach and advise students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Interested applicants should apply by October 6, 2023.

Salary

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table #1 for the salary range. \“Off-scale salaries\” and other components of pay, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $90,000-$140,000 for Assistant rank and $100,000 - $175,000 for Associate rank, inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components.
