The School of Education and Human Development<curry.virginia.edu/> at the University of Virginia (UVA EHD) seeks scholars to fill up to two faculty positions in Early Childhood Education and Education and Neuroscience. EHD is a global leader in developing innovative, rigorous, research-based programs that drive improvements in policy, programs, and outcomes for children, educators, and systems. The scholarly work of EHD faculty has led to major innovations in the fields of early education, and recent interdisciplinary initiatives in autism have led to important collaborations with colleagues in neuroscience. As part of an ongoing strategy to invest in research and development that has high potential for impact and innovation, UVA EHD seeks candidates for distinguished scholars to fill two recently established endowed chairs in areas of high impact and leverage for improving education and human development: 1) early childhood education, 2) education and neuroscience.

The first is a tenured/tenure-eligible position for a senior scholar to fill the Jane Batten Professor of Early Childhood Education, which is focused on early education and care programs and policies. We seek candidates actively pursuing a program of high-impact scholarship with interest in collaborating with existing faculty on major initiatives related to research-practice partnerships across the globe, such as: 1) the development of new and effective tools that enhance program impact; 2) professionals who work with children through novel, scalable, and effective training materials and activities; and/or 3) collaborating with state and national leaders to provide data and analytics that drive policy and decision-making. Several of these efforts are affiliated with research centers, including Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL<education.virginia.edu/faculty-research/centers-labs-projects/center-advanced-study-teaching-and-learning-castl>) and the EdPolicyWorks Center<education.virginia.edu/faculty-research/centers-labs-projects/edpolicyworks>, which include an extraordinary and interdisciplinary complement of faculty, students, and staff with expertise focused on the intersection of educational and applied developmental psychology, education policy, economics, and evaluation.

EHD faculty are deeply committed to and actively engaged in research focused on issues related to equity, inclusion, and culturally-responsive approaches to instruction. The School is also building expertise related to simulated learning and teaching environments, and the application of these and related technologies (e.g., AI) to teacher training and professional development models. We seek an experienced scholar interested in helping strengthen and expand this portfolio toward the end of translating “what we know” into the practice and policy of “what we do.” We expect successful candidates to lead and integrate pioneering research that links to child development, educational psychology, program design and evaluation, and/or policy that helps to transform early education outcomes, programs, practices, and professionals. We seek candidates with a range of interests in the field.

The second position is for a tenured/tenure-eligible professor to fill the Sandra Stern Professorship in Education and Neuroscience, which is focused on linking education with recent advances in neuroscience to conduct research with potential to transform educational processes and practices. Leveraging the rich and exceptionally interdisciplinary environment of UVA, the Sandra Stern Professor will lead this transformational, cross-university effort to focus on the links and implications of neuroscience for education theory, practice, programs, and policy. UVA EHD’s ambition is to accelerate growth, broaden our reach, and intensify our positive impact by integrating the field of neuroscience into our research programs on teaching and learning. This position builds on recent hires in the Brain Institute, those tied to the STAR<education.virginia.edu/faculty-research/centers-labs-projects/supporting-transformative-autism-research-star> initiative in autism, faculty in the Department of Psychology working on social neuroscience, as well as faculty within the School interested in stress and mindfulness.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can address fundamental gaps in knowledge about the dynamic nature of classroom instruction; the neural, cognitive and social systems responsible for student engagement; the development, validation, and use of neuroscience measurements in classrooms and other applied teaching and learning settings; and the need for tools to more efficiently and effectively improve teaching and learning, with careful consideration of developmental and cultural differences. We are interested in candidates with expertise in areas such as the basic genetic and neurophysiological processes associated with attention and self-regulation; neurophysiological bases of functional domains such as social behavior, communication, and learning; and/or development, validation, and utilization of neuroscience measurements in classrooms and other applied teaching and learning settings. It is expected that this hire will radically deepen the understanding of teaching and learning in actual classroom settings by integrating and comparing traditional measures of classroom processes with neurophysiological measures of constructs related to attention, emotional arousal, and stress in teachers and/or students, and in turn have connections to learning and engagement.

Required Qualifications:

* Doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, educational psychology, child development, cognitive science, developmental science, or a closely related discipline.
* A strong interest in and commitment to actively participating in an interdisciplinary research and teaching environment.
* Demonstrated record of leadership, publications, influential scholarship and sponsored research related to early childhood education and/or applied neuroscience.
* Demonstrated interest in problems of practical significance in education.
* Explicit evidence of commitment to diversity and of advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate level courses related to early childhood education and/or neuroscience.
* Experience advising and mentoring doctoral students and overseeing doctoral student research.
