A multi-year full-time postdoctoral position is available at Florida International University for a candidate with interest and experience in structural and functional MRI. The position is part of a program of research on sleep and negative overgeneralization in 260 peri-pubertal youth with anxiety funded by the NIH (R01MH116005, MPIs Dana McMakin and Aaron Mattfeld). The position will be under the mentorship of Dr. Mattfeld (a cognitive neuroscientist), and Dr. McMakin (a developmental/clinical psychologist). This project focuses on negative overgeneralization, which is a core dimension of anxiety that is poorly understood, and refers to the tendency to generalize aversive responses from one context (house fire) to others (camp-fire) that share features. We will investigate how memory processes that are known to occur during sleep can go awry and affect neural mechanisms (pattern completion) that underlie negative overgeneralization. The study includes state-of-the-art, multi-modal measurements in a sample of 260 peri-pubertal youth. All participants complete MRI measures, and a subset complete polysomnography (PSG). The successful candidate will be an integral member of the team and will be expected to lead and collaborate on publications and grant submissions. Ready access to the rich study data for candidate initiated supplementary studies and funding opportunities via the NIH NRSA or other mechanisms will be highly encouraged. We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated interest in neuroscience and a strong publication record as well as ability to operate independently and as part of a team. A PhD or equivalent degree in a related field and prior experience with acquisition and processing of MRI data are required. Computational skills and programming experience (e.g., R, Python) are desirable. Strong written and spoken communication are essential. Please send a cover letter, CV, and names of three references to Dr. Aaron Mattfeld (" >).
